Notes / Reviews
Many of Holly's fans would agree that her collaborative works are among her finest, and this 2009 release is no exception - it's stunningly beautiful. In fact, in Ladyslipper's humble opinion, it's her best yet! These artists - Holly, Pat Humphries and Sandy O - deliver some truly gorgeous arrangements on their 3-part harmonies, at times sounding like a full choir. Holly writes: 'A few years ago, I was one of many hundreds of thousands who gathered to protest the U.S. invasion of Iraq. I was invited to sing. Pat and Sandy of emma's revolution stepped up on the platform to join me in song. With their harmonies surrounding me, I could feel the activists move in closer to the unified sense of purpose. Growing up with singing siblings, I had an early practice ground for voices in harmony and the power that comes from singing together. And that has been true in this collaboration. 'I believe some artists come to this world willing to get close to the difficult, are called upon to express the elusive, inspired to evolve our species. Artists often accept the consequences of a broken heart so that we might heal a wounded soul. Some paint, some dance, some write. We came to sing.' Pat and Sandy a.k.a emma's revolution write: 'Singing is a journey from voice to voice, community to community, collecting bits and pieces of inspiration that shine through in future songs. 'We have covered a lot of territory singing together. Friends for years before we got married in 2001, we are on the road 200 days a year, writing and performing songs for peace, justice, sustainability, and ... marriage equality! 'In our collective decades of work as activist songwriters, we have crossed paths with many amazing and talented beings. one of the most remarkable among them, the fabulous Holly Near. We have been inspired as much by Holly's years of dedication to social change as by her dramatic singing and storytelling. 'On this recording, the three of us have delved into these songs, each venturing back into her musical beginnings, passions and influences to create arrantements that sometimes even surprised us! We hope you enjoy the ride.' And Ladyslipper writes: 'We think this is an absolute must-have - very highly recommended!'
